In 2011, I thought I had it all. My husband and I moved into our dream home on the water. I put down $75,000, upgraded it with marble floors and chandeliers, and loved watching swans glide across the bay. But behind the scenes, he had lost his job and turned to the casino. For 18 months he intercepted foreclosure notices, and by the time I discovered the truth, the house was already gone. He left for Florida, Hurricane Sandy hit a week later, and I was left to fight foreclosure alone. I showed up in court pro se after my lawyer no-showed — and I lost everything.
While I was still reeling, my Mom suddenly became paralyzed. For about 7 years she lived in a hospital bed in the living room while my sister and Dad provided around the clock care. She endured infections, surgeries, near-death emergencies — all while holding a group insurance plan most people would call “excellent.” But after nearly $3 million in bills, her coverage maxed out. She was cut off, improperly discharged, and forced into medical bankruptcy before she eventually passed away.
Those 2 experiences taught me what most people never realize until it’s too late: the bank will protect itself, not you, and even “great insurance” can fail when you need it most. That’s why I started Unboring Insurance. Not to shuffle papers or sell cookie-cutter plans, but to protect families from the heartbreak I’ve lived through myself.
